Aleksander Aamodt Kilde is one of the best skiers in the world. Nevertheless, he crashed heavily in Wengen – at least he is in good hands.
Wengen – "This sport can be brutal, but I still love it." With these words, ski ace Aleksander Aamodt Kilde reported from the hospital on Sunday morning after his heavy crash in Wengen. The Norwegian shared a picture on Instagram showing him in a hospital bed – with a tube in his nose, wounds on his face and a kiss on his eyebrow. His girlfriend Mikaela Shiffrin, the best skier in the world, naturally took care of the downhill dominator.
Kilde crash in Wengen: diagnosis, surgery – and a kiss from the best skier in the world
The good news: Kilde apparently got off lightly than initially feared. The 31-year-old suffered a cut in his calf and dislocated his shoulder in the accident shortly before the finish line on Saturday, the Norwegian federation announced on Sunday morning. On Saturday evening, he had undergone surgery in Bern.
"He doesn't have any fractures, but he's injured," said team doctor Marc Jacob Strauss. More details should follow. Kilde also promised to get in touch again in his first post on Sunday morning. "I'm here, patched together by the one and only Mikaela Shiffrin. Thanks for all the messages. I am grateful for all the words of love and support. I'll share more later."

Ski World Cup in Wengen: Heavy crashes and a lot of criticism
Shiffrin had not competed in any races at the weekend and had rushed to her lover in Bern. He had been flown there directly by helicopter from Wengen. The crash had caused horror, as it hit Kilde as the downhill king of recent years.
Especially with him, it was not expected that he would have problems on the difficult and energy-sapping Lauberhorn downhill in Wengen. There was also massive criticism on ZDF's live TV. After all, Kilde, a second top rider, had crashed heavily in Wengen. On Friday, Alexis Pinturault had already been caught in the Super-G – but he was not so lucky. Shortly after his crash, he shared a touching picture.

"The programme we are currently running is madness": German head coach sounds the alarm
Meanwhile, German head coach Christian Schwaiger is struggling with this year's race calendar, which demands an extremely large number of competitions and rides from the athletes in a short time. "The program we are currently running is insane," he said in an interview with the German Press Agency. In Wengen, there were two downhill races and a super-G this time. In a few days we will go to the dreaded Streif in Kitzbühel.
"If we overload the weekends with races like that, we challenge that really bad things still happen," warned Schwaiger. He has the greatest respect for the performance of the two fastest on Saturday, winner Marco Odermatt from Switzerland and second-placed Cyprien Sarrazin from France. "But the sport lost today."
