De Rossi played for the club as a midfielder between 2001 and 2019. He was part of the coaching staff of the Italian team for a few months (2021-22) and then managed between October 2022 and February 2023 SPAL, which was then playing in the 2nd division and was relegated at the end of the season.

Hours after parting ways with Jose Mourinho, the Roma club announced the appointment of 40-year-old Daniele De Rossi as their new coach. He played for the club as a midfielder between 2001 and 2019.

Former Italy international Daniele De Rossi has been appointed coach of AS Roma until the end of the current season, replacing Portuguese Jose Mourinho, who was sacked earlier in the day, the Italian top-flight club announced on Tuesday.

Daniele De Rossi has been appointed first-team coach until June 30, 2024," the club wrote on its X account (ex-Twitter).

De Rossi, 40, wore the Roma shirt for 18 seasons between 2001 and 2019, before hanging up his boots in 2020 after a few months in Argentina with Boca Juniors.

World Cup winner with Italy in 2006 (117 caps, 21 goals), the former midfielder has a relatively modest record with Roma: two editions of the Coppa Italia (2007, 2008) and the 2007 Italian Super Cup.

His coaching career is just as modest: he was part of the coaching staff of the Italian team for a few months (2021-22) and then managed between October 2022 and February 2023 SPAL, which was then playing in the 2nd division and was relegated to Serie C at the end of the season.

Under his leadership, the club from the city of Ferrara, in Emilia-Romagna, played 17 matches and won only three.

After their heavy defeat against AC Milan (3-1) on Sunday, AS Roma are 9th in the Italian Championship.

Mourinho had been in charge since July 2021: he led Roma to the first edition of the Europa Conference League (C4) in 2022 and led them to the Europa League final last season.

But Roma are lagging behind in the race for the title and even the Champions League qualifying places. They were also eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia by arch-rivals Lazio (1-0).
