Who will Julian Nagelsmann nominate for the home European Championships in 2024?

Some players have already secured their ticket, while others are left trembling.

Munich – The time until the 2024 European Championship in our own country is becoming increasingly short.

And thanks to the convincing DFB victories against France (2:0) and the Netherlands (2:1), the European Championship mood is finally emerging in Germany a few months before the start of the tournament.

National coach Julian Nagelsmann seems to have already found his provisional squad for the European Championship in his own country.

Nagelsmann names 23-man squad for European Championships: Who is there?

A good six months before the European Championships, Nagelsmann asked himself the fundamental question of whether he might have to give up two percentage points of talent and instead throw in two more 'workers'.

The 36-year-old seemed to have taken this idea into account when nominating the squad for the two European Championship endurance tests against Équipe Tricolore and Elftal from Holland.

Nagelsmann called up six newcomers for the two international matches in March.

Established players such as Leon Goretzka, however, had to stay at home.

The successes against the runner-up world champions from France and against the Netherlands should certainly prove the ex-Bayern coach right.

Squad nomination for the home European Championship is a crucial question for Nagelsmann

Nevertheless, the squad nomination for the home European Championships is likely to be a crucial question for Nagelsmann.

But who will ultimately make it into the 23-man squad?

We give an overview of who of the players has already secured their European Championship ticket (as long as they don't get injured) and who still has to worry.

These players have secured their European Championship ticket

  • İlkay Gündoğan:

Made captain by ex-national coach Hansi Flick and confirmed by Nagelsmann.

FC Barcelona's midfield director will also lead the DFB team onto the field at the home European Championship.

  • Manuel Neuer:

Was reinstalled as number one in the German goal before the international break in March.

Then the 38-year-old was injured during training and had to leave early.

However, this will not change his status as the first national goalkeeper.

  • Toni Kroos:

Celebrated his DFB return against France and the Netherlands and was immediately the linchpin of the German game.

His European Championship ticket is set in stone.

  • Joshua Kimmich:

Is considered Julian Nagelsmann's absolute confidant and is firmly scheduled as a right-back.

Kimmich did very well against France and Holland and will travel to the European Championships as the leading player.

  • Florian Wirtz:

    The future of German football.

Nagelsmann thinks highly of him and rewards him with generous game shares.

Could finally become a shooting star at the European Championships.

  • Jamal Musiala:

What applies to Wirtz also applies to Musiala.

The 20-year-old is not only the future of the DFB, but also the present.

He was able to showcase his skills again against France and the Netherlands.

Is the second magician in the German team alongside Wirtz.

  • Antonio Rüdiger:

Was announced as Germany's new defense chief after Mats Hummels was ousted and showed decent performances in the two European Championship endurance tests in March.

Rüdiger can definitely count on being nominated for the squad.

  • Leroy Sané:

After the freak out against Austria, he missed the international break in March and therefore missed important training sessions and minutes of play.

Sané is still firmly scheduled for Nagelsmann and, despite the red card, traveled to the team just to be there.

  • Marc-André ter Stegen:

Replaced the injured Neuer against France and Holland and did a good job.

Ter Stegen is number two in the German goal.

  • Jonathan Tah:

The 28-year-old is currently probably the most in-form DFB defender and can also play as a central and right-back.

That makes him indispensable for Nagelsmann.

These players have a good chance of going to the European Championships

  • Maximilian Mittelstädt:

A real starter for the international games in March.

Played both test games from the start and did a more than decent job - but also had one or two wobbles in the game.

The left-back received extra praise from Nagelsmann after the Holland game and can justifiably dream of the home European Championship - and that as a starter.

  • Niclas Füllkrug:

His quota in the DFB uniform speaks volumes – eleven goals in 15 international matches.

He also scored the strange winning goal against Holland.

However, Füllkrug only came off the bench in both international matches and only came on as a substitute in the second half.

  • Robert Andrich:

Made his debut in the international match against Austria and was the rock of the German game alongside Kroos in the international matches in March.

Despite no guarantee of a regular place at Bayer Leverkusen, Andrich has a good chance of being on the European Championship train.

  • Chris Führich:

Came on as a substitute against Équipe Tricolore and Elftal and brought a breath of fresh air into the German game.

With exactly that role description, he should be a candidate for the European Championship squad in June.

  • Benjamin Henrichs:

The full-back didn't cut the happiest figure against Turkey and was only a substitute behind Kimmich in the two international matches in March.

However, the RB player can hold both defensive wing positions and therefore has a good chance of getting a ticket to the European Championship.

  • Pascal Groß:

Was allowed to start twice on the USA trip, but had to settle for a substitute role in March.

However, Gross definitely plays a role in Nagelsmann's plans.

  • Serge Gnabry:

Nagelsmann knows him from his time at Hoffenheim and Bayern and appreciates the offensive player.

However, after a difficult start to the season in Munich including injury, he has to get back to his old form.

  • Kai Havertz:

Started as a left-back against Turkey and Austria - but played as a striker again in the international matches in March, ahead of Füllkrug.

Is valued by Nagelsmann because of his playing qualities and can be more or less certain of his European Championship ticket.

  • Thomas Müller:

Despite his declining playing time, he is still considered a loudspeaker in the team.

In this role, he should also be indispensable in terms of sport at the European Championships.

  • David Raum:

Didn't play a big role in the USA trip, but was nominated for the March test matches.

If he continues to perform at RB Leipzig, it could work out with a European Championship ticket.

  • Robin Koch:

Showed strong performances in Frankfurt and made his comeback to the DFB team during the international break in March.

Didn't see any minutes of play there though.

Must continue to perform if we really want to get a place in the squad at the European Championships.

These players must be worried about their European Championship ticket

  • Kevin Trapp:

The Eintracht keeper was probably the only DFB player to impress in the international matches against Turkey and Austria in the absence of Marc-André ter Stegen.

However, he was not taken into account for the test matches against France and the Netherlands.

For a long time, a European Championship nomination as a substitute keeper seemed certain, but now the 33-year-old suddenly has to fight for his place as number three.

  • Leon Goretzka:

Has been in improving form for weeks at FC Bayern after a difficult last season.

However, he was not nominated for the international matches in March.

Goretzka is suddenly in the role of challenger and has to perform consistently for Bayern in the last few weeks before the European Championship, otherwise it could be difficult for him to get a European Championship ticket.

  • Mats Hummels:

Nagelsmann initially brought the Rio world champion back into the DFB team and values his experience.

However, there was not enough for a nomination for the international matches in March.

If he accepts his role as a replacement for Rüdiger and Tah, the home European Championship could still work.

  • Bernd Leno, Oliver Baumann:

Nagelsmann will probably not nominate four goalkeepers in a 23-man squad.

If both Neuer and Ter Stegen travel to the European Championships, there will only be one goalkeeper spot left, and Trapp will still have a say.

  • Robin Gosens:

Sufferer of the recent radical change in the squad under Nagelsmann.

Missed the course in November because he became a father.

On the trip to the USA, however, he was in the starting line-up twice.

However, he was not nominated in March.

Players like Mittelstädt, Jan-Niklas Beste and the flexible Henrichs are likely to be ahead at the moment.

  • Niklas Süle:

Left out of BVB since the start of the season, he was still called up twice by Nagelsmann.

However, he didn't play a minute against Turkey and Austria and wasn't nominated for the international matches in March.

A clear hint from his former mentor Nagelsmann.

  • Nico Schlotterbeck:

Placed at BVB, ignored by Nagelsmann.

He has to improve further in the club in order to become an option for the DFB uniform again.

  • Malick Thiaw:

Should be ahead compared to Süle and Schlotterbeck.

Still has to confirm his strong form at AC Milan.

  • Emre Can:

Despite his captaincy at BVB, the midfielder has often found himself on the bench recently.

If he finds his way back to his old form, he will be interesting for Nagelsmann simply because of his player profile.

  • Julian Brandt:

Walks between genius and madness at BVB.

Was allowed to start twice against Turkey and Austria, but was able to make little or no impact.

He was not taken into account for the games against France and Holland.

Nagelsmann could have been referring to him, among others, when he announced that he would forego “perhaps two percent” of talent in the future.

  • Jonas Hofmann:

Nagelsmann has always called him up, but he only played 25 minutes against Mexico.

Expressed his disappointment after not being nominated for the test matches in March.

Despite good performances in the club, he is a candidate for elimination due to the strong competition.

  • Grischa Prömel, Kevin Behrens, Marvin Ducksch:

All celebrated their first nomination for the DFB team under Nagelsmann, but it will be difficult with a European Championship nomination.

Due to his position, Ducksch currently has most of the arguments on his side.

These players have outside chances

  • Maximilian Beier:

Celebrated his breakthrough at TSG Hoffenheim this season and is a center forward.

This automatically makes him interesting for Nagelsmann.

Was also rewarded with a nomination for the international matches against France and Oranje, but did not see any minutes of play.

  • Deniz Undav:

The Stuttgart striker saw a few minutes of play in the final phase against France and can expect outside chances due to the lack of competition in the German attack center.

  • Aleksandar Pavlović:

Was originally nominated for the international matches in March.

Only tonsillitis prevented him from making his debut in the DFB uniform.

His chances at the European Championships depend on whether he continues to show such strong performances for FC Bayern until the dress rehearsals in June against Ukraine and Greece.

  • Waldemar Anton:

The Stuttgart defender was called up for the international matches in March and came on as a substitute against France shortly before the end.

If VfB's soaring continues until the summer, he can certainly have hopes of taking part in the big tournament in the summer.

  • Jan-Niklas Beste:

As a Heidenheim player, he was initially happy about the sensational DFB nomination, but then had to leave injured due to an adductor strain.

Nagelsmann may use him again for the international matches in June.

  • Matthias Ginter:

Is one of the absolute long-running favorites and leading players in Freiburg.

However, it has so far been ignored by Nagelsmann, although the ex-Dortmund player has been nominated for all major events since 2014 except for the 2016 European Championships.

  • Angelo Stiller:

Directs the successful VfB Stuttgart team and is a six-man, but not a classic scorer either.

Does Nagelsmann still give him a chance?

  • Rani Khedira:

In contrast to Stiller, he would be the sought-after clearer and celebrated his comeback after a calf injury at the end of October.

But saw the red card against Bremen and has had to watch again since then.

If Union overturns the goal thanks to him, he could also be interesting for Nagelsmann.

  • Karim Adeyemi:

Has been chasing his form at BVB for weeks.

He also said no to the U21, which is said to have not gone down well with Nagelsmann.

Only an outstanding remaining season should bring him back into the national coach's sights.

  • Marco Reus:

Recently showed his importance again in Dortmund.

Despite his 34 years, he is still one of the best offensive players in the Bundesliga.

If he maintains his form and, above all, stays fit, the BVB professional has a chance of being nominated.

  • Youssoufa Moukoko:

The former prodigy has had difficult weeks in Dortmund.

However, he has recently impressed regularly with the U21s.

If his minutes at BVB increase, he will again become an alternative for Nagelsmann.
