Sebastian Vettel will probably return to Formula 1 this year. Its exact function is not known. A comeback as a driver remains possible.

Munich – Is Sebastian Vettel returning to Formula 1? Since the four-time world champion's career ended after the 2022 season, there has been constant speculation about a comeback - a retirement from retirement, so to speak. A scenario that Vettel himself does not want to rule out. The Heppenheimer has now confirmed his return to Formula 1 this year, although the exact role has not yet been determined.

Vettel announces return to Formula 1

“Of course I am still in contact with people who have accompanied me indirectly or directly in this sense over the last 17 years. And yes, I still have a little something planned, hopefully within the framework of Formula 1 and also this year,” said Vettel in an interview with the TV channels RTL and ntv.

He did not reveal exactly what the comeback in the premier class of motorsport would look like. “It remains to be seen whether that will take place,” said Vettel. Vettel is unlikely to return to the Formula 1 cockpit for the time being.

Vettel doesn't want to rule out a Formula 1 comeback as a driver

“Of course you think about it and flirt with it. And of course there are certain things that I miss. I think the last few days behind the wheel have shown that somewhere. But there are also things that I don’t miss,” said Vettel, who tested a Porsche intended for the endurance classic in Le Mans last Tuesday. The 36-year-old consciously leaves a back door open.

“I think I said back then that I don’t know if I’ll reach a point where I say: I want to go back. At the moment he has not been reached either,” explained Vettel in an interview with RTL/ntv. “But I still can’t rule him out. Who knows what the future will bring.”

“Dad don’t do that”: Vettel children worry about Formula 1 comeback

At the moment, the father of three children is enjoying time with his family, which is why a comeback as a regular driver in Formula 1 is not currently under discussion. “Sometimes a little person says, Dad won’t do that. Then you’re away so much,” said the Heppenheim native. “I think that I have enjoyed the last almost year and a half very intensively, also with the children – and hopefully the children too.”

Above all, the length of the Formula 1 season with 24 races makes him hesitant. “This is of course a big thing that you have to deal with. Of course that goes through your head and you think about it,” said Vettel. “But there are also 24 races and I know from my time how I would like to structure the job if I decided to do it and how much is involved. And then it’s still significantly more than the 24 races.”

Vettel discusses with Formula 1 team boss – speculation about Mercedes comeback

Vettel was recently in contact with Mercedes Motorsport Director Toto Wolff. “And of course we also talked about the fact that a lot is happening at Mercedes, but not specifically about the fact that I could take the place,” said Vettel when asked about the cockpit being vacated by the Silver Arrows. Record world champion Lewis Hamilton is moving to Ferrari in 2025. And as long as the German factory team has not signed a successor for the Brit, speculation will continue about the name Vettel and his F1 comeback.
