At the World Cup final for female ski jumpers, a German world champion was seriously injured after falling during training. Shortly afterwards, the bitter diagnosis of a torn cruciate ligament was confirmed.
Planica/Munich – Very bitter end to the season for ski jumping world champion Luisa Görlich: Shortly before the last competition of the World Cup in Planica, Slovenia, the 25-year-old falls while landing in training and is seriously injured. A short time later, the diagnosis was made: for the second time in her career, Görlich suffered a torn cruciate ligament in her right knee. This was confirmed by the German Ski Association.

And all of this at the site of her greatest triumph to date. Last year Görlich won gold at the World Championships in Planica. In the women's team competition, she was crowned world champion alongside Anna Rupprecht, Selina Freitag and Katharina Althaus.
Almost 13 months later, she suffered the next big setback in her career on the same hill in Planica. In 2018 she had to fight back after a torn cruciate ligament. Just one day after the new injury, she underwent “successful cruciate ligament surgery” in Munich, the DSV announced.
“It will take a few days, but then hopefully I will have digested this 'end of the season' again,” Görlich is quoted as saying in the statement. She now wants to focus on rehab. The goal is to return to the national team as quickly as possible. “It will be a long road, unfortunately I know that from my own experience. “But that also includes the sure knowledge that we can handle it well,” says Görlich optimistically.

Shortly afterwards, the 25-year-old also contacted her fans personally. “Not the season finale I was hoping for. Now regeneration and rehabilitation are on the agenda so that I can be back as quickly as possible and jump with the girls all over the world,” writes Görlich alongside a picture that shows her smiling in the hospital bed. Among other things, she captioned the post with the hashtag “Comebackstronger” (German: come back stronger).

Numerous colleagues from the winter sports scene commented on the post with well-wishes. “Get well soon, my love,” writes toboggan world champion Dajana Eitberger. Her colleague Julia Taubitz comments: “Get well soon. Let your husband take good care of you,” and adds a winking smiley to her comment.
Görlich is by far not the only winter athlete who suffered a torn cruciate ligament this season. Just recently, an Austrian ski ace received the same shock diagnosis.
