Mikaela Shiffrin missed victory in the overall World Cup this season. Ski world champion Federica Brignone doubts the American's attitude.
Milan – The 2023/24 ski season is history. Put the lid on and move on next winter, you might think. But not all athletes have closed the chapter yet. Federica Brignone shoots violently against ski queen Mikaela Shiffrin after the season finale.
Shiffrin has to leave big crystal ball to the competition
The Italian could actually be happy, after all, she finished the overall World Cup in a strong second place. Only the Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami was even better and won the big crystal ball with a lead of 135 points over Brignone. The overall World Cup winner of the last two years, Mikaela Shiffrin, had to be content with third place.

Shiffrin was out for a long time with a knee injury after her serious fall in Cortina d'Ampezzo. She was unable to compete in a race between January 26th and March 10th and thus missed out on valuable World Cup points. Before the injury, Shiffrin was over 400 points ahead, but ended up over 300 points behind. But according to Brignone, Shiffrin only has himself to blame for not being at the top.

Ski world champion makes serious allegations against Mikaela Shiffrin
Because the girlfriend of the injured ski superstar Aleksander Aamodt Kilde skipped the World Cup in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee at the beginning of January. “I don’t feel 100 percent fit yet and will now concentrate on my recovery,” said Shiffrin, who was ailing at the time and missed two super-G races and one downhill. Brignone now accuses Shiffrin of not doing everything she could for her sixth large crystal ball.

“I think Lara would have given her a lot of competition, and she probably would have won either way,” Brignone is quoted as saying on
Repubblica.it
. “At the moment when Shiffrin should have competed, she didn’t compete. She couldn't afford to miss races this winter and in my opinion she almost gave up to avoid having to fight against Lara." Harsh accusations from the Italian towards the American. From this one could conclude that Brignone is insinuating that Shiffrin intentionally avoided the duel with Gut-Behrami.
Brignone criticizes Shiffrin for missing races
But even if Shiffrin had completed the missed races, overall victory would probably have been close. “I am convinced that it would have been difficult for Mikaela to win this year,” says Brignone, who won gold in the combination at the 2023 World Ski Championships. This season, her friend, Olympic ski champion Sofia Goggia, had to go to hospital after a horror fall and shared the sad diagnosis.
