Dusseldorf (dpa / tmn) - The VW Caddy becomes a golf for practitioners: When the fifth generation is launched this year, the city delivery truck uses the same basis as the compact, the manufacturer said at the premiere in Düsseldorf.

Designed for the first time on the Modular Transverse Toolkit (MQB), the Caddy not only gets a new shape with more clearly worked out edges and a new front, but also a new format. It is a bit wider and has a wheelbase that is seven centimeters longer. As previously offered as a panel van, station wagon or van in two lengths of 4.50 or 4.85 meters, it offers space for up to eight people or for the first time also for two Euro pallets.

There is also golf flair inside

In addition to the platform, the Golf Caddy also takes over the so-called Innovision cockpit with digital instruments, a large touchscreen and an almost switch-free operating system, as well as numerous assistance systems. According to VW, this includes, among other things, a cruise control with distance control and active lane guidance, which enables almost autonomous driving on the highway.

The Caddy also owes its Golf to the new diesel engines with so-called twindosing technology with double adblue injection, which already targets the emissions standard for 2021.

A natural gas variant is also planned

According to the VW, four-cylinder engines with 55 kW / 75 PS to 90 kW / 122 PS are available, as well as a petrol engine with 84 kW / 116 PS, which will also be available in a version for natural gas. With this range of engines, VW claims to reduce consumption by up to twelve percent. Volkswagen has not yet given details of the sales price, and the new Caddy is expected to be available this year.
