Volkswagen continues to pursue its projects that focus on the sedan segment (three volumes) for the Chinese market after the giant from Wolfsburg sold 1.6 million compact sedans last year. An excellent result which - according to the Carbuzz website - highlights the idea (of the German brand) according to which each market has its own reference bodywork. And so if Texans are fond of big trucks and pickups like Ram and Ford, the aims of oriental customers are decidedly different. The public of the Rising Sun is in fact much more inclined to purchase compact sedans that represent almost a third of all deliveries. On the contrary, on the other hand, just over 100 thousand Jetta units were sold in America. In China, the German brand offers no fewer than six different sedans to meet the need for a market that enhances the large trunk and spacious passenger compartments, emphasizing much less the SUVs which are highly appreciated elsewhere. This news comes just when China is slowly recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced the general closure of automotive production plants. Now, however, - it is stated on the online site - Volkswagen says that most of its plants based in China are active and functioning again.

In this context, the Lavida sedan is the forerunner, a product born from the SAIC-Volkswagen jv and now in its third generation. Just last year, 491,000 Lavida units were delivered to China, making it '' the best-selling model of all manufacturers in 2019 ''. FAW-Volkswagen is the other joint venture of the German brand in China, and among its successes is the Bora sedan which was sold in 323,400 units last year. Like the Lavida, an electric version of this sedan is also sold on this market.

Furthermore, the Jetta sub-brand was launched in China last year: the name lives in the new sub-brand launched in China last year. The Jetta VA3 (three volumes) sold 145,000 units in 2019.

It is also interesting to note that a survey conducted by the Ipsos research institute last month indicated that more Chinese people intend to buy a car in the next six months. Of the 1,620 respondents, two thirds plan to do so, with the reason that a private car provides less exposure to infections than other forms of transportation. While the effect of Covid-19 on the automotive industry has been largely negative, this survey indicates an unexpected hike once the world's manufacturing plants have returned to full productivity.

So yes, the sedan not only survives, but is an important player for the main brands of the Chinese market. And if elsewhere, such as in the USA, these cars 'fall out of favor', in China the three volumes continue to accumulate large numbers.
