  • When refueling, drivers can save a lot of money.
  • The prices differ at each petrol station and times also play a role.
  • At what time are the petrol prices particularly cheap?

Petrol prices vary from petrol station to petrol station, but the time also plays a role. Drivers can therefore save a lot of money if they fill up at the right time *. The Bundeskartellamt has published the annual report of the Market Transparency Unit for Fuels for 2019. The data collected shows the times at which the fuel prices are cheapest.

Petrol prices can vary up to 20 cents per liter a day

For the evaluation, the fuel prices of the past year from over 14,000 petrol stations in Germany were analyzed. Statistics show that gasoline prices in a city or region can change by up to 20 cents per liter  during the day  . Some petrol stations have price differences of around 10 cents per liter per day . "So it really pays off to find out more and to refuel at the cheap petrol stations at certain times of the day," explains the President of the Federal Cartel Office, Andreas Mundt.

The cheapest way for drivers to fill up is between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Particularly expensive, it is the morning between 5 and 8 o'clock . Meanwhile, according to the report, gasoline prices can fluctuate widely. However, there is no guarantee that all petrol stations will adjust prices according to this pattern. More expensive suppliers would therefore also offer their fuels more often from around 7 p.m. At night, the majority of petrol stations raise prices again. In general, motorists * can assume that cheaper providers remain cheap and more expensive providers remain expensive.

Provide information about gasoline prices with tank apps

Petrol stations are legally obliged to transmit their fuel prices in real time to the market transparency center for fuels. All citizens have the right to find out which provider is currently the cheapest. This works, for example, with tank apps for smartphones *. These show users the current petrol prices at nearby petrol stations - sometimes with a daily course.
