At Pentecost, traffic jams on the motorways may increase. The ADAC reveals where the risk is particularly high.

  • Pentecost is coming.
  • Many people in Germany use their free time to take a trip by car.
  • However, the ADAC warns of traffic jams and names routes where the risk is particularly high.

Because of Whit Monday there is another long weekend ahead. It also starts Pentecost holidays in some federal states. Many people use this for a little trip by car. Since the restrictions caused by the coronavirus crisis * have now largely been relaxed, the ADAC warns of congestion on the motorways at Pentecost. The risk of congestion is particularly high on some routes.

Jam at Pentecost: The risk is particularly high on these days

Many travelers try to avoid upcoming traffic jams by starting as early as possible. But according to ADAC, there is an increased risk that many drivers will be driving at the same time. The risk of traffic jams is therefore particularly high on Friday afternoons and in the early evening  and Saturday mornings  . If the weather is nice over the long weekend, the ADAC also expects many short breaks * from cities that go to nearby recreation areas.

In addition, on Sundays and Whit Monday, trucks can also be on the highways , as the Sundays and public holidays are not valid during the corona virus crisis.

The risk of congestion is particularly high on these routes

The ADAC has listed on which routes in Germany the risk of congestion is particularly high over Pentecost.

  • Major roads to and from the coast

  • Greater Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Munich

  • A1 Cologne - Bremen - Hamburg - Lübeck

  • A2  Oberhausen - Dortmund - Hanover - Berlin

  • A3  Cologne - Frankfurt - Würzburg - Nuremberg - Passau

There is also an increased risk of traffic jams in the coming months

The ADAC fears that the  amount of traffic on the motorways within Germany will be  particularly high this year, since trips abroad are largely not yet possible. For this reason, many Germans opt for a vacation in their own country *. This doesn't just apply at Pentecost. An increased congestion risk can therefore also be expected in the coming months. This is also the case within the cities. The ADFC therefore calls for a better expansion of the cycle paths in Germany *.
