At the end of March, while the pandemic wave was hitting France with full force, cardiologists were surprised to see far fewer heart attacks than before ... but to see more serious ones. The explanation for this phenomenon may be found in the study published this May 28 in The Lancet Public Health under the direction of Pr Eloi Marijon, professor of cardiology and co-director of the Sudden Death Expertise Center (Inserm, University of Paris , APHP) and Dr Daniel Jost, of the Paris fire brigade.
While cardiologists in the hospital saw fewer heart attacks, they observed more cardiac arrests, and INSEE noted a considerable increase in deaths. "Maybe some of the heart attacks that we haven't seen have died before?" , wonders Professor Etienne Aliot, professor emeritus of cardiology (Nancy University Hospital).
