A 60-year-old surfer died this Sunday in Australia after being bitten by a great white shark almost three meters long, according to local authorities. The Queensland man was killed while surfing in Salt Beach near Kingscliff on the north coast of New South Wales, according to Surf Life Saving New South Wales, who released the information.
Shortly after 10 a.m. on Sunday, police and emergency services were informed that a man had been attacked on the beach. Several other surfers and boarders had already rushed to save him, fighting the shark and then helping the man to reach the shore, local police said.
But the gliding enthusiast was bitten deep in the back of the thigh. The white shark victim received first aid on shore for serious left leg injuries, but died on the spot, Surf Life Saving said in a statement.
As a result of this attack, the beaches between the towns of Kingscliff and Cabarita will close for 24 hours. First aid, police and biologists are now actively monitoring the area.
The shark spotted thanks to drones
Surf Life Saving has deployed several jet skis, drones and helicopters to track down the shark. Authorities spotted him from the air and even took photos. In this image taken from an aerial video, a jet ski passes over the offending shark.

The shark biologists evaluated these photos and the bite marks of the sixties, and determined that it was a large white shark about three meters long, according to Surf Life Saving.

This attack is the third to date since the beginning of the year. In January, a diver was apparently attacked by a great white shark off the south coast of Western Australia, although his body was not found. In April, a park and wildlife officer was killed by a shark near the Great Barrier Reef.
