Cleaner air in Rome and Milan, clearer waters in the Po river, less algae in the Venetian lagoon and in the upper Adriatic: here is the first photograph of Italy in lockdown seen from space. Satellites have taken it and can be consulted online in the new interactive Earth Observation platform for Covid-19 (eodashboard.org), born from the collaboration between the European Space Agency (ESA), the US NASA and the Japanese Jaxa.

The currently available data, which will be continuously updated and expanded in the coming weeks, allow to monitor the impact of the pandemic on a global scale by following the variation over time of 30 environmental, 17 economic and 3 agricultural indicators.

By focusing the map on Italy, it is already possible to consult the progress of various environmental indicators, such as air quality in Milan and Rome. The data collected from August 2018 to today thanks to the Tropomi instrument of the European Sentinel-5P satellite, show the halving of nitrogen dioxide concentrations between March and April 2020 compared to the values recorded in the same period of 2019.

Moving instead on the upper Adriatic , the data relating to the concentration of chlorophyll and therefore to the presence of algae in the sea are obtained. The numbers show a sharp drop in the period of the lockdown which, in addition to being attributable to a series of natural factors (such as winds and currents), could also be linked to the reduction of human activities: this is suggested by the images of the European satellite Sentinel- 2, which show the Po clear waters during the most acute phase of the pandemic. In the Venice lagoon, in particular, the reduction of algae could also be linked to the decrease in tourism and maritime traffic, as shown by the clear channels photographed by Sentinel-2.
