Sony announced a new member of its family of full-frame mirrorless cameras, Alpha 7S III, that improves performance and introduces advanced autofocus for hybrid use and a heat-dissipating structure, along with the sensitivity of the S series. And it costs 4,200 euros: that is,  about 640,000 pesos to the blue dollar.

Mirrorless cameras are more professional than compact cameras, but less than traditional reflex cameras that use internal mirrors to take the picture.

Sony redesigned the system architecture in Alpha 7S III to improve video and photo performance. It integrates the backlit 12.1 megapixel (MP) 35mm full-frame Exmor R CMOS image sensor , which reduces rolling shutter up to three times and uses advanced light-gathering techniques to ensure high sensitivity with low noise.

This new image sensor includes a focal plane phase detection AF system for the first time in an S series camera. To complement the new sensor, the Alpha 7S III also includes a new BIONZ XR image processor that provides up to eight times more processing power and minimizes latency.

Brighter OLED viewfinder and 4K recording

The new system also includes the "world's brightest and largest" OLED electronic eye-level viewfinder with 9.44 million dots , as the company notes, and is the world's first dual-slot CFexpress Type A card camera, allowing high-speed data transfer in a compact size.

The Alpha 7S III offers 4K in-camera recording at up to 120 frames per second, 10-bit depth, and 4: 2: 2 color sampling. It also includes advanced movie recording modes such as All-intra encoding and MPEG-H HEVC / H.265 (XAVC HS), and provides three color gamut settings: S-Gamut, S-Gamut3, and S-Gamut3 .Movie theater.

It also supports an HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) image profile and allows up to 4K 60p RAW 16-bit output to an external recorder via HDMI Type A.

The base ISO has been lowered to 80, which translates to a normal range of 80-102,400 (expandable to 80-409,600 for video and 40-409,600 for photography) to provide a more flexible ISO and wide dynamic range with low level noise in all settings.

Vivid colors and contrast detection

It reproduces the colors and textures of vegetation, human skin, and others "consistently regardless of light sources," according to Sony. Gradient rendering has also been refined for better skin tones and to highlight roll-off in portraits. It also improves the performance of automatic white balance.

For the first time in an Alpha 7S series camera , the Alpha 7S III offers Fast Hybrid AF that combines phase detection AF and contrast detection. For environments with a lot of movement, it has Real-time Tracking and Real-time Eye AF, to maintain a constant focus on the desired subject.

Ventilation: cooling assured

The fanless heat dissipation structure keeps the temperature of the image sensor and image processor within their normal operating ranges, preventing overheating and keeping body dimensions compact .

The Alpha 7S III is the first camera in the Alpha series to include Active Mode for freehand video recording with five-axis optical body image stabilization . It is also the first Type E mount body in the Alpha series to feature a variable angle rear display and side opening for shooting on a gimbal at complicated angles.

A digital audio interface has been added to the camera's Multi Interface Shoe (MI Shoe) to record clearer and cleaner audio with a compatible Sony external microphone.

Additional video recording assist features include a redesigned monitoring screen with a prominent red frame that makes it clear when the camera is recording, custom zoom settings, adjustable white balance during recording, screen rotation, recording to intervals, photo extraction from videos and more.

For the first time on a Sony digital camera, the Alpha 7S III features the High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) that enables smooth 10-bit gradients and advanced compression technology to maintain image quality, while significantly reducing file size and save storage space.

The new Alpha 7S III full-frame camera with interchangeable lenses will be available in Europe in September, with an approximate price of 4,200 euros.
