Nancy, Rennes, Marseille, Ajaccio ... more than 1,400 municipalities require masks to be worn outside

To stop the spread of the coronavirus, the mask is needed day by day in city centers, in markets or in green spaces.


In recent weeks, the obligation to wear a mask to curb the spread of the virus has increased. It was first done in all public places, as is still the case since July 20. And it now extends to a large number of city centers. Indeed, since the Ministry of Health recommends wearing a mask in the main busy streets in particular, where social distancing cannot be respected, several cities are taking their responsibility. Here is a list of the main ones.

A large part of Mayenne makes it compulsory to wear a mask at all times

More than 60 municipalities in Mayenne, a department where the virus has been actively circulating for a few weeks, are affected by this obligation to wear a mask. And she is radical. The mask must be worn at all times in the city, such as Laval, Mayenne, Changé or Louvigné, and can only be removed once at home.

Several large cities impose it in frequented places

Brest, Bayonne, Nancy, Strasbourg, Le Touquet, Valenciennes, Cannes, Nice, Orléans ... So many cities require the wearing of a mask, either everywhere and at any time (which is rarer, as in Mayenne), or in defined areas, such as tourist areas and markets, and at certain times.

For example, in Marseille, three zones are concerned. The Old Port and its surroundings, Escale Borély and the Plaine / Cours Julien district can only be visited if you are masked. And this until August 31. Ditto in Rennes, in the city center, in Baud-Chardonnet and in the open-air markets. Still until August 31. Tours, Nice, from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. in certain places, Lille, in pedestrian areas, shopping malls, markets and green spaces, in Toulouse, according to similar instructions or in Amiens, in the most frequented places .

In Paris, however, the situation has not yet become clearer. The police headquarters, at the request of the mayor Anne Hidalgo, announced a few days ago that the mask would become compulsory in part of the city. Since August 4, the list of these places is still being drawn up and should be published " at the beginning of the week ".

Among the cities which impose the mask in places, we could also cite La Rochelle, Saint-Tropez, Bourges, Nîmes, Béziers, Canet-en-Roussilon, Briançon, Chamonix, Blanquefort, Rochefort, Concarneau, Bayeux, Deauville, Saint- Omer or Annecy and Carcassonne.

In Corsica, the wearing of the mask also becomes compulsory from this Saturday in the tourist districts of the big cities, namely Ajaccio, Porto-Vecchio, Sartène, Porticcio, Bastia, Calvi, L'Île-Rousse, Saint-Florent, Aléria or Corte.

A fine of 135 euros

As for closed public places, the fine for non-compliance with wearing a mask is 135 euros. In the event of a repeat offense, it can then climb to 1,500 euros. Extreme case, that of the triple recurrence. 3,750 euros fine and six months in prison may be required.

The obligations to wear the mask are increasing. Unthinkable situation a few months ago, when the Director General of Health Jérôme Salomon assured that the mask in the street was of no interest. But the speech changed and Olivier Véran, the Minister of Health, recalled that the mask was useful when social distancing could not be respected, as in markets, shopping galleries or main tourist streets. Since then, it has even become mandatory.
