Photo: Oliver Berg / DPAAccording to a report by "Bild am Sonntag" ("BamS"), sensitive data from federal politicians and the military could have been tapped in a hacker attack on a Bundeswehr fleet company. According to the report, the apparently successful attack was directed against the data center of BwFuhrparkService GmbH. This is also responsible for the Bundestag transport service.
75.1 percent of the company is owned by the Federal Ministry of Defense and 24.9 percent by Deutsche Bahn. In 2019, it completed a total of 142,000 chauffeur drives for members of the Bundestag, it said. On Friday, the fleet company admitted the cyber attack to parliament, writes the "BamS".
In the attack, private residential addresses could have been tapped by members of the Bundestag. When a member of parliament books the driver service, the passenger name, the time of the start of the journey, the start and end point and additional requirements such as a child seat are saved in the scheduling system.
"The attacker and his motive are not known"
According to "BamS", the Bundestag administration informed the parliamentary groups in writing about the incident. "The attacker and his motive are not known," it said. It is currently neither clear when the data center was compromised for the first time, nor whether data was manipulated or whether data was leaked.
In addition to its own IT forensic experts to analyze and repair damage, the vehicle fleet company also involved HiSolutions AG, which works very closely with the German armed forces, it said. The Federal Office for Information Security had also been informed. "If a successful analysis does not succeed, the intention is to involve the Bundeswehr Cyber Security Center," says the Bundestag administration's letter.
Bundestag Vice President Thomas Oppermann (SPD) said the "BamS": "There is a serious security gap opening up." The incident must be resolved quickly.
