In her first address on the State of the European Union, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed tightening the EU climate target.
Accordingly, at least 55 percent of emissions should be saved by 2030.
The emission values from 1990 are used as a comparison value.
In the so-called "European Green Deal" at the end of 2019, a "comprehensive plan to raise the EU's climate target for 2030 to at least 50 percent with a tendency to 55 percent in a responsible manner" was announced.
In her speech, von der Leyen is now campaigning for the more ambitious goal.
However, the European Parliament and the member states must agree to the new climate target.
