Invention against pollution by microplastics: the tire dust collector

Every time a vehicle brakes, the tires lose tiny particles - which then pollute the air. British students have developed a device to intercept the microplastic.

This adventurous-looking construct is intended to help significantly improve the air quality in large cities in the future.

The invention by British students collects rubber debris from vehicle tires.

This mainly occurs when braking.

According to a study, over half a million tons of tire particles are generated in Europe and pollute the air - in addition, abrasion behind single-use plastic is the second largest source of microplastic pollution in the oceans.

If it falls away or at least reduces it, you kill two birds with one stone.

A device uses both electrostatic effects and the aerodynamics of the rotating wheels to capture the particles before they get into the ambient air.

The developer got the idea during the corona pandemic.

Hugo Richardson, student

"While riding my bike around London during the lockdown, I noticed how clean the air was. I think everyone understands that clean air doesn't have to remain an unattainable dream - it is something we can achieve instantly, if we approach the matter with a clever innovation and a little verve on the part of those responsible. "

The students want to capture 60 percent of all particles that are released into the air.

The concept also impresses seasoned professionals - the team has already won an international design award with its invention and is now applying for a patent.
