The Bundestag has decided to initiate a reform of the vehicle tax for 2021. Drivers of cars with high fuel consumption will have to pay higher taxes in the future.

The Bundestag has decided to initiate a reform of the vehicle tax for 2021.

Drivers of cars with high fuel consumption will have to pay higher taxes in the future.

Road tax is increased for cars with high fuel consumption

Many measures are being considered to reduce CO2 emissions.

The expansion of e-mobility is one of them.

In Germany, e-mobility is to be promoted through the premium when buying electric cars * or through lower taxes on corresponding vehicles.

In addition, the Bundestag has decided that the

car

-

tax

is raised on models with high fuel consumption (via Tagesschau.de).

From 2021 onwards,

these will

include CO2 emissions to a greater extent for newly registered vehicles.

Vehicle tax is up to four euros more expensive per gram of CO2

The amount of the tax should depend on how many grams of

CO2

are emitted

per kilometer

.

If there are

more than 95 grams of CO2

, there should be a

surcharge of two euros for each additional gram

.

For vehicles with particularly high emissions - from 195 grams per kilometer - it should be gradually

up to four euros

.

The tax exemption for all-electric cars will also be extended by five years until the end of 2030.

So far, this was valid until December 31, 2025. Cars that were registered between June 2020 and the end of 2024 and which emit less than 95 CO2 per kilometer are to receive a tax bonus.

+

Those who buy one of the cleanest vehicles that emit up to 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer will pay an average of around 30 euros less than before after the vehicle tax reform.

How to calculate the CO2 emissions of your car

Who the

CO2

-

emissions

wants to find his own car, can be calculated with a simple formula (via German craft newspaper).

One liter of gasoline leads to the emission of 2,320 grams of CO2 - with diesel it is 2,650 grams.

For autogas (LPG) there are 1,790 grams of CO2 per liter and for natural gas (CNG) 1,630 grams.

If you own a diesel car that

consumes

seven liters per 100 kilometers

,

the calculation looks like this

: 7 times 26.5 = 185 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

The 26.5 results if the CO2 emissions per liter are multiplied by ten.

Critics consider the tax increase to be too low

According Tagesschau criticize environmentalists and the Greens that the

increase in the car

-

control too low

was.

The reform would hardly help motorists switch to electric cars.

In addition, a study by the Forum for Ecological-Social-Market Economy has shown that the vehicle tax will be on average

only 15

,

80 euros

more expensive

throughout the year

.

That would therefore not be a sufficient incentive to switch to less consuming cars or electric cars.
