Reducing global energy consumption can sometimes take a roundabout way.
By designing and producing a "chip" that integrates its own air conditioning, with a water cooling system that circulates in the electronic component, researchers at EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne) are proposing a method to reduce the energy consumption of large computer centers.
The impact is major.
The electricity bill for these famous “
data centers
” continues to increase.
More and more powerful, these computers heat up more.
It takes a lot of energy to dissipate the heat.
Only in the United States,
“Data centers consume 24,000 GWh of electricity and 100 billion liters of water for cooling.
Which corresponds to the residential needs of the city of Philadelphia, ”
the scientists said in an article published in Nature on September 9.
Globally, researchers estimate the demand
