Police custody was lifted late Saturday afternoon, that of a "former roommate" in Cergy (Val-d'Oise), the main suspect, aged 18 and born in Pakistan.

As for the police custody still in progress, they therefore concern the assailant, whose religious motivations are no longer in doubt, five former roommates of his apartment in Pantin, his little brother and an acquaintance.

Misunderstanding of "Youssef", a "hero" for a time suspected

As of Friday evening, a man initially considered as suspect and placed in police custody, "Youssef", a 33-year-old Algerian, had been released.

The man, a "hero" according to his lawyer, had actually tried to stop the attacker with a knife, which the investigation corroborated.

According to our information, Ali Hassan explained to investigators to have felt "anger" a few days ago after seeing on YouTube a video showing the republication of the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad by Charlie Hebdo.

He believed that the premises targeted were still those of the satirical weekly and that he had attacked journalists from his editorial staff.

The latter, who has moved to a secret location for four years, has been the subject of new threats since this satirical weekly again published cartoons of Muhammad on September 2, to mark the opening of the trial of the accomplices of the authors of the bloody attack that targeted its editorial staff in 2015.
