More than 40 million corona infections worldwide

6:15 a.m.:

The number of proven coronavirus infections worldwide has exceeded the 40 million mark.

This is the result of a survey by the Reuters news agency based on official data.

Accordingly, more than 1.1 million people died from or with the virus.

4325 new corona cases in Germany

5.14 a.m.:

According to the Robert Koch Institute, the health authorities in Germany reported 4325 new corona infections within 24 hours on Monday morning.

The value is comparatively low - also because not all health authorities transmit data on weekends.

Based on the 2467 infections reported on Monday last week, the current value is significantly higher.

The number of new infections reached 7830 for the third time in a row on Saturday.

The high number of infections in the past few days cannot be directly compared with the earlier record levels in spring.

Meanwhile, significantly more tests are carried out every day, so that more infections are also detected.

According to the RKI, at least 366,299 people in Germany have been proven to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the beginning of the Corona crisis (as of October 19, 12:00 am).

The number of deaths in connection with a corona infection was therefore 9789. That was twelve more than the previous day.

According to estimates by the RKI, there are around 294,800 recovered.

Polish

gym

founds church due to corona restrictions

04.39 a.m.:

To bypass corona restrictions, a Polish fitness studio has called itself a church.

"Because fitness classes are not allowed, we are now offering religious meetings for members of the Church of the Healthy Body," said the Atlantic Sports studio on Facebook over the weekend.

The creative action is intended to counteract a measure with which the Polish government had closed swimming pools and fitness studios in view of the increasing number of corona infections.

"Hard to believe? Everything is possible in this world," said the Facebook page of the fitness studio in Krakow on Saturday.

Atlantic Sports also announced the opening of a shop for training equipment and invited customers to test the products for free on site.

Restaurants across the country are forced to close earlier due to measures to contain the coronavirus.

In high-risk areas like Warsaw, weddings are prohibited and secondary schools teach online.

Church services are still allowed in the Catholic country with 38 million inhabitants, as long as the believers wear masks and adhere to a number of participants.

Telephone sick leave is possible again from Monday

4.30 a.m.:

Due to the aggravated corona situation, patients with cold symptoms can now call for sick leave nationwide again.

The special regulation came into force on Monday and will initially apply until the end of the year - that was decided by the Federal Joint Committee in Health Care.

Patients with mild respiratory diseases do not have to go to a practice just because they need a sick leave.

This should help to avoid full waiting rooms and the risk of infection.

The corresponding sick leave is available for seven days.

To do this, doctors have to ask patients about their condition personally over the phone.

A one-time extension of the sick leave can be issued by telephone for a further seven calendar days.

Caregiver warns of "isolation at all costs"

01:01 a.m.:

The federal government's

authorized

care representative, Andreas Westerfellhaus, warns of a renewed isolation of

those in

need of care given the sharp rise in the number of corona infections.

"Isolation at any cost is not allowed," Westerfellhaus told the newspapers of the "Funke Mediengruppe".

Many of those affected found the isolation in the early months of the pandemic "incredibly stressful".

He therefore supports regulations that ensure that nursing home residents can celebrate Christmas with their families, says Westerfellhaus.

A nationwide concept is currently being worked on to support homes and outpatient care services with rapid tests, among other things.

Italy tightened corona restrictions

12:45 a.m.:

Italy is tightening measures in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

Mayors were given permission to cordon off public squares and streets from 9 p.m. to avoid crowds, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said at a press conference late on Sunday evening.

Arcades and betting offices should close at 9 p.m.

"The situation is critical," he said.

But his government is determined to avoid another lockdown.

Everyone is called to do their part to stay healthy and to help the economy.

Italy posted another record on Sunday with 11,705 cases.

Another 47 people died of or with the virus, far fewer than at the height of the pandemic in Italy in March and April, when more than 900 people died daily as a result of the infection.

Italy was the first country in Europe to be badly hit by the virus outbreak.

After the UK, Italy has the second highest death toll in Europe with 36,543 deaths.
