Covid-19: 250,000 dead in Europe, curfew in Belgium

CORONAVIRUS POINT - New reports, new measures and highlights: an update on the latest developments in the Covid-19 pandemic around the world.


Europe, faced with a powerful second wave, exceeded 250,000 deaths from Covid-19 on Sunday, October 18, leading Belgium to institute a curfew on Monday, October 19, and Italy and Switzerland to announce in turn further tightening of restrictions.

  • More than 250,000 dead in Europe

More than 250,000 deaths from the new coronavirus have been recorded in Europe according to an assessment carried out by AFP from official sources on Sunday at 3 p.m.

In total, 250,030 deaths from Covid-19 have been declared in Europe (for 7,366,028 cases), of which more than two thirds in the United Kingdom (43,646 deaths), in Italy (36,543), in Spain (33,775), in France (33,392) and in Russia (24,187).

More than 8,000 deaths have been recorded in the last seven days (8,342), the heaviest toll over a week in the region since mid-May.
