Darknet control center on the Moselle: the bunker of evil

2020-10-19T13:24:50.124Z

A former military facility near the town of Traben-Trarbach was a center for criminal activity on the Internet for a long time - until 650 police officers arrived. A team of reporters reconstructed the case for the SPIEGEL cover story.

Many roads lead to Traben-Trarbach on the Moselle, where excursions into the underworld are part of the regular program.

Frankfurt-Hahn, a hub for low-cost airlines until the corona shock, can be reached by car in half an hour, the federal highway 53 between Trier and Zell crosses the town on the southern bank of the river.

Up in the Hunsrück, the European route 42 connects southwest Germany with Belgium, narrow country roads wind their way up the vineyards towards Longkamp and Kröv.

Those who come to Traben-Trarbach on foot can take the twelfth stage of the Moselsteig long-distance hiking trail from Ürzig, up to the flat top of Mont Royal, a mountain peppered with history and stories.

Up there, until a few months ago, until a police presence of 650 officers arrived for a large-scale operation in Traben-Trarbach, by far the largest traffic junction far and wide, was a global intersection, even if the traffic here was called "traffic".
