They were prevented from reaching Piazza della Signorina, one of the city's main tourist squares.

Clashes then took place with police in riot gear in the adjacent streets.

Some protesters threw Molotov cocktails, bottles and stones, knocked over trash cans and smashed surveillance cameras.

About 20 people were arrested.

"We lived a surreal, terrible and painful night in Florence," wrote the mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, on his Facebook page on Saturday morning.

“This is not how we express our grievances, this is not how we express our suffering.

It is only violence for the sake of violence, gratuitous, ”he added.

In northeastern Italy, a few hundred people also demonstrated.

Most of them were young men, including hooligans, some doing the fascist salute, La Repubblica reported.

During the week, the cities of Rome, Milan, Naples and Turin experienced tense protests after the Italian government announced a "semi-containment": a curfew in several large regions, the closure of bars and restaurants at 6:00 p.m., as well as sports halls, cinema and concert halls.

In Barcelona, ​​dangerous objects are thrown at the police and dustbin fires.

In the Spanish city, some 700 people have protested against restrictions which include a curfew from 10 p.m. and a ban on leaving the city for the long All Saints weekend.

The demonstration escalated when about fifty people "began to throw dangerous objects in the direction of the police", told AFP a spokesperson for the regional police (Mossos d'Esquadra).

Protesters in particular threw security barriers in the direction of the police, who responded with batons.

As the police sought to disperse the crowds, firefighters sprayed the streets to extinguish trash fires.

About twenty police officers were injured and twelve people, including two minors, were arrested.
