Marches des Libertés: 98 police officers and gendarmes injured, the toll is growing

The day before, the Minister of the Interior had initially mentioned 37 police officers and gendarmes injured during the demonstrations on Saturday


In 24 hours, the toll has more than doubled.

Nearly a hundred police and gendarmes were injured on Saturday during demonstrations against the law "Global security" and police violence, according to a report given this Sunday by Gerald Darmanin.

In a tweet, the Minister of the Interior argued that, according to this final assessment, there had been "98 wounded among the police and gendarmes".

“I give them my full support.

The perpetrators of this violence must be prosecuted, ”he added.

Police beaten up by protesters

A little earlier in the afternoon, also in a tweet, Gérald Darmanin had assured to have had "long conversations with most of the injured police officers".

“I wanted to inquire about their health and assure them of my support,” he added.

A previous report from the Ministry of the Interior reported 62 wounded among the police (39 in the provinces and 23 in Paris).

Several videos posted on social networks showed sometimes isolated police beaten by protesters.

Two demonstrators, who made a report to the General Inspectorate of Police (IGPN), were injured in the provinces, according to the police.

In Paris, an assessment of the injured on the side of the demonstrators was not yet carried out.

A freelance Syrian photographer, Ameer al-Halbi, 24, who was covering the protest, was injured in the face in Paris.

The secretary general of RSF, Christophe Deloire, denounced on Saturday evening on Twitter the “unacceptable” police violence against this collaborator of Polka Magazine and AFP.

81 arrests

On Sunday, the two media also denounced the violence, AFP calling for a police investigation.

An "internal administrative" investigation was opened Sunday, according to a police source, to determine the circumstances in which the photographer was injured.

According to the Interior Ministry, 81 people were arrested during these demonstrations.

In Paris, out of the 29 police custody (26 adults and 3 minors) intervened, “14 gave rise to deferrals” to justice “including 3 in direct appearance;

2 were the subject of a reminder to the law and 10 gave rise to a classification without follow-up ”, specified the Paris prosecutor to AFP.

The prosecution added that "3 police custody (had) been extended".

In total, these demonstrations gathered, according to the Interior, 133,000 people including 46,000 in Paris, the organizers for their part announcing 500,000 participants, including 200,000 in the capital.
