Monday, 18/01/2021 can definitely register as one of the saddest days in the world of motoring.

The Top Mountain Motorcycle Museum in Hochgurgl, Austria, was completely destroyed yesterday after a fire broke out (apparently in its basements) around 4:00 p.m.

The museum opened to the public on April 16, 2016, as part of a joint project of the towns of Hochgurgl, Obergurgl, and the Otztal Valley Council (which is on the Austrian-Italian border), coming from beyond Timmelsjoch (skiers among you will surely know the neighboring town of Solden located several miles down the valley).

The project included an upgrade of the northern ski lift - the Kirchenbann to a modern gondola lift, which at its base station, located at an altitude of 2,474 meters, established an impressive comfort complex that includes a quality and super designed restaurant, checkpoint (and payment) for the Timmelsjoch, Act instead.

The special museum, which was crowned as "the tallest car museum in the world", covered an area of more than 2,600 square meters and housed a very magnificent collection of more than 300 rare and unique items, from more than 120 different manufacturers.

As befits Austrians, the place was characterized by a level Spectacular pedantry, from the meticulous design of the place, to the level of restoration and maintenance of the tools on display. Along with (relatively) modern tools from the 60s, 70s and 80s, unique tools from the early days of the previous century could be seen. Who served in the First World War (on both sides of the barricade).

Alongside a permanent display of tools, the place displayed changing temporary displays, including snow removal tools from different eras, cars and racing motorcycles that looked like they had just arrived from the Pitts, as well as military and war tools from various eras.

The owners of the museum had a special fondness for Indian motorcycles and American tools in general.

All these and more, as stated - are no more.

There is a particularly warm corner in my heart for this museum, which was a super special attraction with which we would wind down our journey to Central Europe.

A visit to the comfort complex in general, and to this stunning museum in particular was the icing on the whipped cream peak of the spectacular mountain passes on the Austrian-Italian border.

How did they even sit on these things?

The little consolation in this story is that we have at least managed to expose a few dozen of our customers to this unique place.

Now we only have to cuddle up to the memories while viewing the dozens of photos we have left from the visits to the place.

At this stage it is not clear what will happen to the museum's website, so I highly recommend taking the opportunity to visit it now.

Here.

Some tools that are worth a second look - Keenan Cohen

Harley Davidson's Servi-Car (Photo: Official Website, Tal Ryer EuroMotoTours.co.il)

This tricycle you see above is worth a brief explanation, this is Harley Davidson's Servi-Car.

The strange tool was born during the economic downturn of the 1930s.

When Harley-Davidson was looking to expand its product range.

It was originally intended to serve as garages and car service centers as follows: When a car was returned to the customer, the Servi-Car would be towed after it and after the vehicle was returned to the customer, the garage worker would get on the vehicle and ride back to the garage.

Later, other service providers and even the police also used it.

It remained in production until 1973. This specific tool from 1967 was purchased in this exact condition at auction in the United States in 2018.

It looks like the great-grandfather of executive scooters, but left everything behind and absorbed the radial engine in the front wheel (Photo: Official Website, Tal Ryer EuroMotoTours.co.il)

From left to right: Porsche 911, Porsche 356, Alfa Romeo 8C, but the silver one on the right is the most interesting (Photo: official website, Tal Reier EuroMotoTours.co.il)

So this silver car is HH49, and if that does not mean anything we will add that it is made by Hoblin, still does not say anything?

So its full name is the Hoblin-BMW HH49 and if you still do not have lights on it is fine.

This car was BMW's Formula 2 car in the late 1940s.

It was a second round of his Formula 1 standings that was an accessible springboard for drivers who wanted to reach Formula 1 but did not soar to its heights in terms of popularity and prestige as the heiress of the pre-World War II Grand Prix races.

The HH car series participated in a tour between 1947 and 1950.

The engine was six-cylinder in a column from the 328 with a volume of 2.0 liters and even 130 hp.

The Kettenkrad, here in the coloring of the Wehrmacht's Africa Corps (Photo: official website, Tal Reier EuroMotoTours.co.il)

First of all let's start with the strange name of this strange tool - Kettenkrad.

It's a combination of the words Ketten - "larvae" with the word krad which is the military abbreviation for the official German term for motorcycle (Kraftrad) and after we all tried to pronounce it in accent, let's talk about the tool itself.

It was originally designed to be a companion to parachuted forces and could also get into relatively light transport aircraft.

Its interesting steering mechanism allows it to be steered by tilting the handlebars to a certain angle and if the handlebars were turned even further the tool would turn like a tank - by braking the larvae on the side you want to turn.

Another interesting point concerns that it was also possible to move with it without the front wheel, but only using the larvae in the case of a particularly rocky terrain.

It was also possible to tow a dedicated trailer with a carrying capacity of 350 kg.

Production of the military model was halted in 1944, however NSU resumed production after the war for 3-4 years for agricultural use.

The Swedish Snow Master, guess what engine he has?

Some really interesting things about Snow Master.

The first is that he was born because of the desire of the Swedish engineer Lars Larson in a pleasant, passable, easy-to-operate vehicle and simply to go fishing with his brother.

The second is that despite the use of the larvae, it uses a steering mechanism that is not based on the handles that control the larvae - but on the steering wheel like that of a normal car.

Third: It has been used quite successfully even in the dunes of the Sahara where it is called Sand Tracs.

The seating arrangement in it is also unconventional - the driver sits with the face forward, but the rest of the passengers, up to seven, are arranged in two benches arranged on the side and turn inside (clear inside, what to see outside? Everything is snow).

By the way seven passengers, its length is 3.9 meters yes?

Like a little car.

The engine, like the gearbox, the steering wheel, the electrical and lighting system and many other components were off-the-shelf products of Volkswagen.

Yes, the same air-cooled 4-cylinder boxer engine of the Beetle, initially with 36 and later up to 54 hp. By the way, the end of production of this engine for the European market in 1981 was also what ended this strange tool life.

But not before it served Benat And, and even in the Royal British Marine Corps, where he even carried a 120mm anti-tank cannon.
