An asteroid in orbit between Mars and Jupiter was named after the senator for life, Liliana Segre, who survived the deportation to Auschwitz-Birkenau.

It's asteroid 75190, the same number the Nazis had tattooed on the forearm of the extermination camp survivor at the age of 13.

This was decided by the International Astronomical Union (Iau), accepting a request made by the National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF) of Trieste.

The name of the asteroid, 75190 Segreliliana, was announced on the occasion of the Remembrance Day, at the opening of the conference 'Convivere con Auschwitz, edition 2021', organized by the University of Trieste in collaboration with the Wannsee Conference Memorial and the Italian Cultural Institute of Berlin.

Born on 10 September 1930, Liliana Segre was appointed senator for life by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella on 19 January 2018 for her outstanding achievements in the social field.

She was captured in Milan with her family and deported to Poland on January 30, 1944 from platform 21 of the Milano Centrale station, only to be released on May 1, 1945, among the few children who survived the extermination.

"That my name and the number to which each of us was reduced to Auschwitz, translated into a celestial body, can serve as a reminder and warning 'that this has happened' and it could happen again without information, knowledge, conscience and responsibility" , is the message addressed by Senator Segre in a letter to the organizers of the conference.

In her autobiography 'Until my star will shine', written with Daniela Palumbo in 2015, Liliana Segre recalls that "at the end of the day, my fantasy world, which I clung to to 'escape' from the field, had become a little star I saw in the sky.

Every day when it got dark I looked for her, I talked to her.

I was happy to find her again, it meant that another day had passed, ”he writes.

The chosen asteroid, discovered in the late 1990s, is a minor body of the so-called Main Asteroid Belt, between Mars and Jupiter.

It has a diameter of 1,498 meters and a revolution period of 3.74 years.

"An asteroid is a celestial body that reflects the light of the Sun: it is therefore a very appropriate recognition - concludes Ewine van Dishoeck, president of the Iau - for those who with their moving testimony have managed to reflect the light of all the innocents extinguished by madness Human".
