The incident took place around 11 p.m. During a police check Thursday evening, in the parking lot of the Casino brand in the town of Schoelcher, the gendarmes tried to stop a scooter carrying two people, not wearing helmets. .

The driver refused to comply and hit one of the soldiers “at full speed”.

The shock resulted in serious injuries for the agent who was thrown “several meters” and hit “seriously in the head and face”.

The 36-year-old soldier suffered multiple facial fractures and was hospitalized, General William Vaquette, commander of the Martinique gendarmerie, told AFP on Friday morning.

The driver arrested

The driver, slightly injured and briefly hospitalized, was arrested and taken into police custody this Friday.

A psychological unit was set up for the members of the victim's patrol.

50% of attacks on gendarmes in overseas territories

In total, “50% of attacks on gendarmes in 2023 were committed in overseas territories, this represents 25% of gendarmerie injuries,” recalled General Lionel Lavergne, commander of the gendarmerie overseas during a hearing in the Senate on Thursday.

“Regarding the situation in Martinique, for the last year, we deplore more than 160 soldiers of the gendarmerie victims of physical attacks and we have more than 40 serious injuries,” General William Vaquette told AFP.
