The ARD talk show “Caren Miosga” causes heated discussions. Natalie Amiri shoots sharply against Foreign Minister Baerbock. This is about the war in Israel.
Berlin - There was a heated discussion on Caren Miosga's ARD talk show on Sunday (April 14th). Natalie Amiri finds sharp words against Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (The Greens) and criticizes her current assessment of the situation in the Middle East. In the “Anne Will” successor, among other things, the geopolitical consequences of the Iranian attack on Israel were debated. Middle East expert Guido Steinberg, FDP General Secretary Bijan Djir-Sarai and journalist Natalie Amiri were present as guests.
First, Middle East expert Guido Steinberg gave his assessment. According to him, it is unlikely that the Israelis would launch a direct attack on Iran. “Nothing has happened that would force the Israelis to attack the Iranians directly,” said the expert. However, Steinberg considers an attack on the Hezbollah militias to be quite realistic. “Hezbollah is attacking anyway. If Israel hits back now, hardly anyone could complain.”
Amiri shoots against Baerbock: Foreign Minister is “naive”, Tehran must be contained first
Natalie Amiri was visibly pessimistic about a peace process between Israel and Hamas. Amiri headed the

studio in Tehran from 2015 to 2020 and saw Iran's attack as a "tactic of attrition"; under no circumstances did Iran itself want an escalation of the conflict, as the journalist noted. It is now not just up to Hamas to be able to start a peace process. Tehran also had to be contained first; this was the only way the peace process would be possible. “The peace process begins not when Hamas lays down its arms, but ... when Tehran is contained, and that has not happened at all so far.”
She was referring directly to Baerbock's statements and contradicted the minister's statements. “If the Foreign Minister says that Hamas must lay down its arms and then we can enter into the peace process, I see that as naive,” as the journalist sharply criticized Baerbock’s statements.
Hope for peace in the war between Israel and Gaza: “political will” makes it possible
FDP General Secretary Djir-Sarai saw the Iranian attacks as a new dimension of the war in Israel. Iran is now taking an active role in the conflict, which the state had previously avoided. By supporting the terrorist militia Hezbollah in Lebanon, among others, Iran was only indirectly involved in the current conflict.

In general, the FDP politician sees Iran's role in the Middle East conflict as crucial: "You can put it bluntly today that Iran is essentially responsible for almost all conflicts in this region." The ideology and the donors for Hezbollah come from directly from Tehran, as the 47-year-old explains.
At the end of the discussion there was still a glimmer of hope for ending the war in Israel. It is not too late for peace in the Middle East, as Amiri noted. But: a change in policy is needed. “It takes one thing and that is the political will. And not just empty words strung together, for months, for years... it takes a consistent policy to contain Iran.
