DGB Training Report: Trainees are as dissatisfied as never before

2019-08-29T17:46:21.270Z

Lots of overtime, lousy pay, hardly any rest: apprentices complain about their working conditions - according to a DGB study especially about the working hours.

Anyone who starts training as a hairdresser, will most likely not finish them - every second trainee in this apprenticeship breaks off. The same applies to chefs and restaurant professionals.

The reason for the high cancellation rate? According to a survey of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) there is a bad mood among trainees in Germany. Only around 70 percent of respondents said they were "satisfied" with their education - the lowest level since the start of the annual survey 13 years ago. Last year, around 72 percent rated their education as good.

Trainee wages: tops and flops when paying

A crucial dissatisfaction factor according to the report are the working hours. More than a third of respondents reportedly worked overtime regularly (36.3 percent). Contrary to what is required by law, 13 percent of these trainees do not receive overtime pay or time compensation. More than half of the respondents are expected to be mobile outside of their training periods.

Also problematic: According to the report, trainees working in shifts often can not comply with the rest periods. The apprentices actually have to take an eleven-hour break after a shift - only half of them do it. Hoteliers, sellers and chefs are the most affected.

According to the study, every third party lacks the legally prescribed training plan, which is intended to regulate the structure of the teaching and make the contents verifiable. There are problems especially with smaller companies and in the craft.

Details about the study

Who was questioned?

Around 15,000 young people were interviewed in the 25 most frequently visited training occupations.

When were the trainees interviewed?

The adolescents were interviewed from September 2017 to April 2018. The survey of trainees took place predominantly at the Berufsschultouren of the union youth. These are educational offers for students of upper grades centers and vocational schools. The survey took place in writing and on site.

How meaningful are the results?

In order to ensure comparability of data, only survey data from apprentices who are in an in-company training (dual system) were included in the sample. To compensate for bias in the overall presentation by the over or underrepresentation of individual occupations in the sample, the individual occupations in the evaluations were weighted according to their actual proportion of trainees. Due to the high number of respondents, the significance of the results is ensured.

On the other hand, training for administrative assistants, mechatronics, industrial mechanics and electronics for industrial engineering is rated as good. These training occupations have one thing in common: the above-average remuneration. While an administrative assistant earns on average 1014 euros in the third year of apprenticeship, the salary of a budding hairdresser is just half. The DGB therefore calls for a minimum wage for trainees - which would be at 635 euros a month, however, still well below the average.
