Billion dollar deal: Electricity giant from E.ON and RWE is facing approval

2019-08-30T12:28:27.684Z

The planned billion dollar deal between RWE and E.on has good prospects, according to SPIEGEL information. The competition guardians could also put quite mild requirements.

The proposed billion dollar deal between the two electricity giants RWE and E.on will be approved by the relevant competition authority in Brussels. This is evidenced by internal papers available to SPIEGEL.

E.on could therefore count on comparably mild conditions:

  • Discussions include the sale of a business unit with up to 275,000 customers who receive heating heat from E.on through special tariffs.
  • In addition, E.on would have to dispose of more than 30 charging stations that the company operates along the federal motorways on Tank and Rast facilities.
  • These would include sales of smaller companies in Eastern Europe.

For Stadtwerke and competitors such as the Hamburg green electricity provider Lichtblick such an exit would be a major setback. They protested from the first day against the merger. The competitors fear that the planned exchange of parts with E.on will create a new electricity giant that could dominate much of the market and prices.

The agreement reached between the two electricity companies stipulates that E.ON will take over RWE's power grids and Innogy's future-oriented business. In return, RWE will receive E.ON's Renewables division and a 17 percent stake in the new group.

The agreement to exchange shares was taken more than a year ago.
