EIU Ranking: These are the most liveable cities in the world

Nowhere is it living as well as in Austria's capital: Vienna achieves an almost perfect result in an "Economist" study, and Australian metropolises remain far ahead. Paris, however, slips in the ranking.

Vienna is still the most liveable city in the world. In the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) annual ranking published on Wednesday, the Austrian capital was in the top spot, as it did in 2018. This is followed by the Australian metropolises Melbourne and Sydney in front of the Japanese Osaka and Calgary in Canada.

Vienna is the world's most liveable city for the second year running according to @ TheEIU's #Liveability index. I wrote about it here: https://t.co/6xtivljYmt

In total, eight European cities are among the 20 most liveable cities in the world. For years, Melbourne had defended the top position in the ranking - until Vienna last year, a European city led the list for the first time. Among other things, the reason stated at that time was that both the danger of attacks in Western Europe and the crime rate in Vienna had dropped.

The regularly appearing EIU rankings receive a lot of attention each year. A total of 140 cities were evaluated for this purpose, including criteria such as standard of living, crime rate, health care, cultural offer, environmental situation, school system and urban infrastructure. For the first time, the effects of climate change were also included in the assessments this year.

Vienna achieved an almost perfect result of 99.1 points out of 100. Sydney rose from fifth place to third place. The reason given was that the city had improved its cultural offer and the environmental situation.

Paris slipped by six places after the sometimes violent protests of the "yellow west" movement: The French capital was only ranked 25th.

Damascus, the capital of Syria, ended up in last place in the ranking. Just before that, Lagos landed in Nigeria and Dhaka in Bangladesh.
