Never before have so many Germans spent their twilight years abroad. The pension insurance has recently transferred approximately 240,000 pensions to seniors with a foreign residence. "This is a new record," said Dirk Manthey of the German Pension Insurance Association.
"In the last ten years alone, around 50,000 foreign payments have been added," says Manthey. In total, around 22.9 million pensions will be paid to German senior citizens.
Among the most frequent destinations are Austria, Switzerland, Spain, the USA and Australia. According to statistics of the pension insurance, the cost of living is comparatively favored by the comparatively favorable states of southeastern Europe. There, the number of German pensioners has doubled within ten years to more than 10,000.

"As a rule, getting your old-age pension abroad is possible without any problems - Deutsche Rentenversicherung transfers the pension worldwide," says Manthey.
A retirement in the South Seas remains exotic. On the small dream islands in the Pacific like Fiji, Tonga and Samoa live less than 50 German pensioners.
