Nuclear power plant operators apparently claim 276 million euros in damages

RWE, EnBW and E.ON are said to have demanded a large sum from the state - for the renewed overtime of their nuclear power plants. Greens doubt that the operators have such great damage.

CDU, CSU and FDP decided in 2010 to extend the life of German nuclear power plants. But already in 2011, the federal government overturned the decision and decided the nuclear phase-out. As a compensation for investments that want to have made the companies, which were invalidated by the exit, three nuclear plant operators have now demanded a very large sum from the state according to a report.

As the "taz" reported, RWE, EnBW and E.ON demanded a total of 276 million euros in damages from the Federal Ministry for the Environment. A spokeswoman for the Ministry of the Environment confirmed this demand. The applications would now be examined.

Compensation for investments made

The green budget policymaker Sven Kindler told the "taz": "The black and yellow policy for the nuclear lobby still harbors great financial risks." As a precautionary measure, according to the newspaper, a sum of 250 million euros has already been allocated to the 2020 budget.

Possible are the demands due to an amendment to the Atomic Energy Act, with which the Federal Government had implemented a judgment of the Federal Constitutional Court. This is a compensation for investments made, which then became worthless.

E.ON made no statements to the taz regarding the size of its claim and the nature of the investments made. RWE and EnBW had each spoken of a "mid two-digit million amount". According to EnBW, this was the case, among other things, for fuel purchased for the longer term. RWE generally spoke of "plant retrofits".
