Flying is harmful to the climate, airlines know that too. The French Air France has now announced a plan to offset the CO2 emissions of its domestic flights.

The aviation industry is currently under pressure in the face of global climate change. Now the French airline Air France has announced that it will invest a lot of money in climate protection projects from 2020 - and thus offset the emission of the climate gas CO2.

"From January 1, 2020, we will offset 100 percent of our country's CO2 emissions," said Anne-Rigail, director general of French regional newspaper Le Parisien. The airline is doing this "voluntarily", it involves investments of several million euros. The interview was published on Monday night's website.

This refers to the approximately 500 flights that Air France offers daily within France. Their CO2 emissions are to be compensated by financing projects for tree planting, protecting the forests, transforming the energy system or preserving biodiversity, Rigail said. France's largest airline also wants to completely abolish disposable plastic on board from January completely.

A consequence of flying ash?

After questioning whether the popular in Sweden phenomenon of flying ash, so the abandonment of flying due to the high climate impact, already noticeable, the Air France boss said that the decline in bookings was "not high enough" to clear causes to be able to determine.

In July, France announced that it would introduce an eco-tax on airline tickets from next year. The levy should be between 1.50 euros and 18 euros per ticket, as Transport Minister Elisabeth Borne announced. The maximum amount is therefore due for bus fares of the long haul. The government expects a revenue of more than 180 million euros annually. He should especially benefit the railway.

According to Bornes, almost all flights that start in France are affected. Exceptions should be made for transfer connections that go via France. Flights to the Mediterranean island of Corsica and the French overseas territories are also excluded.
