Food can be the biggest business in stationary retail in Germany. This is the result of the ranking published by the Cologne-based retail research institute EHI of the top 1000 retailers with the highest turnover. This is led by the big grocers. The supermarket chains and discounters occupy nine of the top ten places.
The undisputed market leader was the Edeka supermarkets, which according to EHI alone came up with a net turnover of more than 27 billion euros. Behind them are the discounters Lidl and Aldi Süd. On the other places landed the Rewe supermarkets, Netto, Kaufland, Aldi Nord, Penny and Real. As the only non-grocer in the top ten, the drugstore chain dm ranked tenth.
According to EHI 2018, the 1000 largest stationary distribution lines included in the study generated net sales of 311 billion euros. It accounted for almost 60 percent of total retail sales. According to EHI, the turnover of the three largest stationary retailers alone - Edeka, Lidl and Aldi Süd - exceeded the total online sales of 56 billion euros.
In addition to the food trade in the stationary trade study, according to the study primarily the home improvement and furnishing, fashion & accessories and technology play a significant role.
