As more and more people order products on the Internet, Swiss Post wants to improve its parcel service. In view of the continuing package boom, the Group is opening 3000 additional packing stations. By the year 2021, the number of automatic machines with self-service lockers is expected to grow from the current figure of 4,000 to around 7,000.
The new stations would be installed everywhere - in the countryside as in the city, said the Deutsche Post DHL on Wednesday. The first automatic stations where customers can pick up and drop parcels were introduced in 2003. They can be found in train stations, petrol stations or shopping centers.
The parcel shipment is booming because of the online trade. This is a growth driver for the deliverers like DHL. In the second quarter of the current year, domestic sales at Domestic increased by 10.5 percent to 1.4 billion euros. The company also benefited from price increases.
In addition to the currently around 4000 packing stations, Deutsche Post currently has around 24,000 additional parcel delivery points. These are above all private partners such as magazines, lottery and stationery shops or petrol stations offering postal services. Also beyond the year 2021, Deutsche Post plans to set up further packing stations. The company sees them as an important part of the nationwide provision of postal services.
