Pram test of Stiftung Warentest: "Hardly enough room to kick off"

2019-10-04T09:23:17.330Z

How good and safe are strollers? Stiftung Warentest has tested 26 models - with sometimes sobering results. Here test leader Anne Kliem explains why especially double strollers have done so poorly.

SPIEGEL: Ms. Kliem, young parents absolutely want the best for their baby. What is important for a good stroller?

Anne Kliem: Especially on the ergonomics, the car must be really suitable for the child. For newborns, for example, it is important that they can lie absolutely straight. This means that the lying surface must not be angled. In addition, the car must be safe, it must not tip over or unintentionally fold. And he must be free of pollutants.

SPIEGEL: Do the needs of parents also play a role?

Kliem: Of course, the car must be practical and suitable for everyday use and should last as long as possible. That is why Stiftung Warentest has tested combi pushchairs, which are equipped with a bath and a seat unit. In the best case this is enough for babies between zero and nine months and then for infants up to four years.

SPIEGEL: You have tested eleven much-bought mono stroller and three double stroller. (Click here for the test report at Stiftung Warentest) With which result?

Kliem: Overall, the results are encouraging. In recent years, there have always been big problems with prams, for example in terms of pollutants. In a test ten years ago, the Stiftung Warentest had ten of 14 candidates with "poor" rate, because they were polluted. Since then a lot has changed. We can really recommend six models, the test winner is even relatively cheap with 400 euros.

SPIEGEL: Which model is that?

Kliem: The "Hauck Saturn R Duoset". The clearly has the best seating comfort and can be assembled quickly and intuitively.

SPIEGEL: What is the price range for prams?

Kliem: You can easily spend over 1000 Euro, the most expensive model in our test costs 1260 Euro. But our results show that you do not have to. For the assessed with "good" stroller is even one for 260 euros here.

SPIEGEL: Ironically, one of the most expensive, the "Bugaboo Donkey 2 Mono" for 1200 euros, has only been rated as "sufficient". What was the problem here?

Kliem: This model can be widened to a double stroller, in which the children ride side by side. To keep the whole thing compact, the baby tubs are rather narrow - too narrow. In terms of length, the child fits well in, but he lacks the freedom of movement to the side. With diapers and winter clothes is hardly room to kick.

SPIEGEL: Does this problem occur more often?

Kliem: For some models there is a gap between the use of the carrycot and the seat unit. Particularly striking was the model "Babyone T-Light". Even at the age of five months, the tub can become too small, but many babies can only move to the seat after nine months. The T-Light was also polluted and therefore got a "poor".

SPIEGEL: What other defects did you notice?

Kliem: For some strollers, unfolding and collapsing is quite cumbersome, because you have to solve different security systems. This is impractical in everyday life. For others, carrying and transporting are cumbersome because they are quite heavy. This is especially true for the double stroller. One should pay attention to this when buying. You always have to get into the bus with the car or overcome an obstacle on the road, so it should be easy to handle.

SPIEGEL: Double stroller cars are increasingly seen on the streets. How did they do in your test?

Kliem: Not good. Of the three tested one was "satisfactory", two got only "sufficient". Whether the children lie side by side or are stacked on top of each other - in any case there is a loss of comfort for both the children and the parents. Sometimes the tub is too tight, sometimes the seat unit can not be optimally adjusted. In addition, these cars are heavy and impractical to handle.

SPIEGEL: In the past, tall women and men often complained that the handlebars are too low and always push their feet against the wagon wheels when pushing. Did this change?

Kliem: Only a car in the test had a problem with it. That was one of the double stroller. The children sit diagonally above each other, and the lower tub limits the freedom of step when pushing a massive. Since you do not bump against the wheels, but constantly against the tub. It is not pleasant for the child either.

SPIEGEL: Baby car tests are a classic of Stiftung Warentest. Already at the first test in 1972, your magazine titled "Children on the Edge" - it was about safety flaws. Why does it take so long for the manufacturers to react?

Kliem: Because only in society does something have to change. For prams and children's products in general, the sensitivity for pollutants or safety deficiencies today is simply higher than decades ago. But it has also become much better, because we look the industry on the finger and - if necessary - make problems public.

SPIEGEL: What could baby-bug manufacturers improve today?

Kliem: When it comes to seating comfort for the older kids, for example, they could do something. Since the backrests can not be folded back so far that the children have a really flat mattress. But that's important because every kid needs a break and then sleep on a flat surface. Stiftung Warentest has been calling for that from manufacturers for years. Most stroller also have no growing footrests. They would take the pressure from the knees of the children when sitting.

SPIEGEL: When you walk through Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin or Munich's Glockenbachviertel, you get the impression that pushchairs are not only a means of transport, but also a fashion statement. Has the design played a role in your test?

Kliem: No, the Stiftung Warentest only looks at the quality of the products. Of course, we have made sure that the particularly trendy strollers are in the test. But whether this is a popular luxury brand with a shrill design plays no role at all for the result. For us, it depends above all on whether the carriages for the babies are safe and ergonomically optimally built.
