The US trade deficit rose in August as imports of US consumer goods rose to a record high.

The trade deficit widened 1.6 percent to $ 54.9 billion, the Commerce Department said.

Economists had expected the trade deficit to rise slightly to $ 54.5 billion in August.

The goods deficit with the European Union jumped 23.7 percent to $ 15.3 billion, the ministry said.
