New train timetable: ICE 4 travels more frequently between Hamburg and Switzerland

More ICE 4 trains and new routes - Deutsche Bahn has presented its roadmap for the coming year.



Along the Upper Rhine and in Switzerland, Deutsche Bahn customers will be able to use the new ICE 4 more frequently in the future. In the new timetable, which applies from mid-December, the new trains are initially intended for use on the route Hamburg-Frankfurt-Karlsruhe-Basel-Zurich-Chur , as the group announced.

So far, the ICE 4 is used according to a spokeswoman between Berlin and Munich, Hamburg and Stuttgart, and Hamburg and Munich . From June next year, the new ICE will also be used on the connection between Berlin and Interlaken , it said.

The ICE-4 trains have more seats and bicycle compartments. Overall, the Bahn has ordered 137. "At the moment, a brand new ICE 4 comes on the rails every three weeks."

The new timetable also provides for a denser long-distance service on major ICE lines .

  • Between Berlin and Munich and Berlin and Frankfurt , additional trips are to be offered "for a gapless hourly service".
  • On the route Hamburg-Rhine / Ruhr further Sprinter and amplifier trains are to be used. The offer between the two federal states should increase by 15 percent.

Already known was the establishment of a new intercity line between Dresden, Berlin and Rostock. From mid-December onwards ten daily services will be offered on this connection, starting in March every two hours. This gives six places along the route again a regular long-distance access.

Customers can view the new timetable from 15 October and also book trips. With the "Strong Rail" concept, which is also the focus of the timetable, the railway wants to be more punctual and to expand capacities. For this billions are to be invested.

With that, the railroad scored 1.6 percentage points better than last year and achieves the value it has set itself - although, according to the survey, almost one in four long-distance trains still arrive late.
