"Norwegian Spirit": Frustrated passengers rebel on cruise ship

2019-10-11T00:17:21.510Z

Two weeks at sea, with stops in, among other places, the Netherlands and Iceland: travelers had imagined their holidays on "Norwegian Spirit". But then everything happened differently than planned - and the frustration was great.

It was not going well. The cruise liner "Norwegian Spirit" had just left Southampton for a two-week voyage in northern Europe, but already the first planned stop in Amsterdam was canceled, as several media reports. Instead, it should be laid out in French Normandy - but the weather conditions also prevented this stop.

Then we continued to Norway, where the passengers could only see the fjord landscape from afar. In addition, they were then told that one of the main attractions of the tour - the stops in Iceland - was canceled. Instead, two more cities in Norway should be approached.

In addition, the conditions aboard the cruise ship, the guests were increasingly worse. In messages on Facebook and Twitter travelers wrote bad-tasting food and non-functioning toilets. One guest, Cody McNutt, set up the Twitter account "NCLHELL" - Norwegian Cruise Line Hell - and compared the journey to hell with 14 days.

As another alternative port was then reportedly announced the Scottish Greenock. When the city was already in sight, however, it came to a stop of the ship. After about an hour's waiting time, the captain declared: Due to the weather conditions, this stop must be canceled.

That was the point where it was apparently too much for many guests. According to the media reports, they gathered in the atrium of the ship and loudly demanded their money back. Photos and videos show travelers who use posters to write "We want a refund".

The US station CNN spoke with two American travelers aboard the ship. Therefore, the guests were so angry, because with each failed stop even booked tours had to be canceled on land - and some of them had not been eligible for reimbursement. They also accused the staff of not responding adequately to the situation.

Norwegian Cruise Line apologized for having to change the itinerary due to weather conditions. "We apologize for the inconvenience and disappointment of our guests," the statement said, citing several media outlets. The guests were therefore offered 25 percent discount for the next cruise.
