In the summer of next year, the time has come: Venice visitors who are not staying in the city will pay a fee. The planned entry is expected to come on July 1, 2020 and will be at least three euros. This was announced by the city government of Venice.
The Italian lagoon city is particularly affected by mass tourism. The fee for day visitors and cruise passengers was announced a few months ago, but their introduction was initially postponed. Visitors staying in hostels in the city are exempt from payment. Hotel guests must already pay a local tax.
"We are not interested in raising funds," Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said at the beginning of the year. Rather, the maintenance and cleanliness of the historic city are expensive. "We have to tell the whole world how difficult it is to manage such a special place."
According to the current plans, the entrance to weddings should rise to six to eight euros. From January 2021 then the standard fee should be six euros. If Venice is crowded, the price should rise to eight to ten euros. On less frequented days, three euros are due. The payment method is still being worked out. According to the city visitors threaten 100 to 450 euros fine if they should try to avoid the fee.
Venice has been facing a huge influx of tourists for years. Again and again there are ideas how the visitor volume could be steered. At the same time tourism is the main source of income for the city on the Adriatic.
