2019-10-12T05:50:39.714Z

Sightseeing at 335 meters: New York is building a viewing platform for people without fear of heights. A glass bottom reveals the view down - and offers even more thrill.

Just under 20 meters, it will tower into the skies above Manhattan, like a sharp arrow, all around glass: With the observation deck, which is just emerging in the West Side on the Hudson River, New York gets a new tourist attraction. It will be located at 335 meters altitude. According to the operator, it will be the fifth highest outdoor observation deck in the world - and the first of its kind in New York City.

The Observation Deck will be accessible via the elevator of the skyscraper "30 Hudson Yards" and will cover the 100th and 101st floors. All of Manhattan should then be able to survey visitors, as well as to the west of New Jersey and the state of New York.

Observation platforms with glass bottom: Attention, perspective!

The view is likely to be good not only because of the height - also the material can look deep. Both the floor and the walls are made of glass, which was produced in Germany and further processed in Italy.

This promises thrill - for beginners and advanced:

  • For some, it might be a challenge to even enter the arrow-shaped platform and look through the glass floor into the abyss.
  • Those who want to let more adrenalin rush through his bloodstream, who seeks the proximity to the transparent wall. The 79 glass panels should be slightly inclined, so that visitors can lean there with their whole body. The angle of 6.6 degrees outwards should provide for heart racing.

The Observation Deck not only includes a glass-bottomed walkway, but also a terrace - the result is an outdoor area of around 700 square meters. The viewing platform is expected to open in early 2020. It will be called "Edge" (in German: Rand).

The new attraction is part of a major property project in western Manhattan. Hudson Yards is the birthplace of a brand new neighborhood of residential and office buildings, shopping center, restaurants and a hotel.

Similar platforms already exist in different locations around the world - see the photos here. In Melbourne, there is even a project of the same name: in the Eureka Tower, a walk-in glass cube can drive out of the building, so that visitors can look down deeply.
