Climate Protection Strategy: Deutsche Bahn seeks wind turbines

2019-10-13T09:02:23.054Z

Deutsche Bahn wants to miss a greener image. She wants to replace electricity from coal-fired power plants with green electricity - and starts a large bidding process for this according to SPIEGEL information.

On some of their trains, the train has already adapted symbolically to the new era: green instead of red stripes adorn a number of ICE locomotives. The message is accompanied by a repositioning of the group: as climate protection partner of the state.

The owner wants it so, so the federal government. Last month, when the Climate Protection Package was approved by the Cabinet, it also included a chapter on the railway. Not only the VAT on long-distance travel should sink, it says. The federal government also wants to donate ten billion euros of fresh equity capital to its rail company by 2030.

It will be "the largest investment in the railway since its founding," said Rail CEO Richard Lutz.

But the train now retaliates. She is demonstratively launching a bidding process for green electricity, which she intends to purchase in the coming years. Until 18 November, energy companies can offer electricity from renewable sources.

Altogether the announcement after SPIEGEL information amounts to 500 gigawatt hours. The agreement with the producers is to run for eight years. Deutsche Bahn wants to increase its share of renewable energies to 61 percent by 2020.

"From 2038, the train will be on the road with 100 percent green electricity"

Naturally, the power hunger of the railway is large: trains, track systems and stations consume 10,000 gigawatt hours each year. That corresponds to the power consumption of a city like Hamburg.

So far, 57 percent of electricity comes from green electricity. Claims the train at least. However, this is also possible through the purchase of green electricity certificates, ie by green electricity on paper. In addition, the railway also operates coal-fired power plants and draws electricity from nuclear facilities.

"From 2038, the train will be running on 100 percent green electricity," says Torsten Schein, CEO of DB Energie. "We are consistently replacing expiring power plant contracts with renewable energies."

At the beginning of September, Deutsche Bahn had already signed a cooperation agreement with the Essen-based energy company Innogy to produce wind on the high seas.
