In the scandal over several dead by contaminated sausage Hessens consumer protection minister has admitted problems in the monitoring of the enterprise. Authority confusion should have led to a solo effort.

The control of the Hessian sausage manufacturer Wilke did not go as planned. The Hessian consumer protection minister Priska Hinz has admitted disagreement in the review of the producers involved in a scandal over germ-laden sausage. A scheduled for September 5, joint control with other authorities have made the district Waldeck-Frankenberg alone, said the Green politician before the Environment Committee of the Parliament in Wiesbaden.

About the defects found in the control in the now closed operation, the district had reported to the Regional Council in the meeting to the current state of knowledge then insufficient, said Hinz. Actually she had according to the control of the establishment in Twistetal-Berndorf next to the district of the regional council Kassel and the Landeslabor Hessen to participate.

According to current documents, the control of the district had been carried out before the appointed date and before the arrival of the representatives of the regional council Kassel and the state laboratory Hesse. Instead, it was therefore only for a joint meeting that day.

"Not understandable where Wilke sausage was sold"

According to the Hessian Ministry of Consumer Protection it was only on 16 September, it became clear that there is a connection between the Listeriosausbrüchen and the company Wilke. Hinz said, "Education is now the focus, and we have asked the county to report in detail on outstanding issues by 25 October." The states revealed in the operation called Hinz shocking.

In Wurst von Wilke Listeria had been detected. Three deaths are associated with company products. Authorities had closed the operation two weeks ago. The public prosecutor Kassel investigates on suspicion of the negligent killing against the managing director. The consumer organization Foodwatch accuses the authorities of having reacted too late.

And there are still gaps in the Enlightenment. The callback had indeed started smoothly, said Hinz. But the case also shows the weaknesses of the existing system. Thus, the authorities do not have a complete list of the sales outlets concerned. A company is legally obliged only to inform its direct suppliers and direct customers about defective goods. These would then have to inform their own customers.

"We just can not understand in which supermarket and in which canteen the Wilke sausage was sold," it says in a statement from the Ministry. The recall could therefore only occur along the supply chain, since only the companies and other traders know the flows of goods. Hinz had previously demanded a stricter food inspection.
