Seven deleted routes: Ryanair takes planes from Hamburg

2019-10-17T08:20:25.946Z

The Irish budget airline Ryanair gives up its base at Hamburg airport. This eliminates seven routes - including two direct connections.

The competition of low-cost carriers is getting more and more intense - now the Irish company Ryanair is closing its base with two stationed aircraft in Hamburg on January 8, 2020. As Hamburg Airport announced, seven routes to the 2020 summer timetable would be canceled: Faro, Krakow, Lisbon, Gran Canaria, Oslo-Torp, Verona and Zadar .

However, the resolution of the base does not mean that the airline from Hamburg would not be bookable. 14 destinations will be served in the summer - with machines stationed at other airports.

According to the airport operator, of the canceled routes only two were offered by Ryanair alone: Krakow (Poland) and Verona (Italy). These are therefore no longer represented by direct flights from Hamburg. The remaining destinations would continue to be served non-stop by other airlines.

Ryanair generally justified the move with below-average revenues. The company has reviewed its flight plan, according to own data for low-income connections. Whether other airports in Germany are affected, the company said.

Airport wants to replace missed routes as possible

"The aviation market is on the move and the airlines on a consolidation course," explained airport chief Michael Eggenschwiler. He regretted that "Ryanair closes numerous bases in Europe and also affects Hamburg". For the strong Hamburg market, he will work to "replace the selection on the canceled Ryanair routes".

Ryanair had already reduced its Hamburg goals by 3 to 17 for the winter timetable beginning at the end of October. The restrictions in the timetable contribute that the airline does not receive new aircraft as planned. The latest edition of the Ryanair standard jet Boeing 737 Max is still awaiting readmission by the US and European air traffic controllers after two crashes.

Since 1 November 2016 Ryanair had two Boeing B737-800 stationed in Hamburg. From Hamburg, the airline had its first flight on 26 October 2014 to Lisbon.
