The electric car manufacturer Tesla may now produce in China. The California company was added to the list of government-approved automakers, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said. Tesla initially took no position.
The company can now begin production at any time in China. The group has built a two-billion-dollar plant in Shanghai - Tesla's first overseas production facility. The production there should begin in October.
In Shanghai, Tesla plans to build at least 1,000 Model 3s vehicles per week by the end of the year. This is intended to stimulate sales in the world's largest car market and to avoid import tariffs for cars from the USA. However, it is still unclear whether the Group can achieve its production targets, as there are still uncertainties with regard to workers and suppliers.
In addition, sales of battery-electric cars in China slumped by around 33 percent in September compared to the same month last year. That was also because the government cut subsidies for low-range electric cars.
Tesla plans to open more plants outside the US in the future. In search of a European or German location, the company also looked around in Lower Saxony - the state is now hoping for a Tesla factory.
