Sales weakness: Bosch wants to cut 1,600 jobs by 2021 in Baden-Württemberg

The demand for diesel and gasoline vehicles is falling. That's why supplier Bosch wants to reduce 1,600 jobs at its plants in Baden-Württemberg. Affected are several departments.

The consequences of the diesel crisis continue to increase Bosch: the automotive supplier wants to reduce in the next two years, well over 1600 jobs in Baden-Württemberg in view of the declining demand for diesel and gasoline cars. That said a Bosch spokeswoman.

This affects jobs in the drive division at the Bosch sites in Feuerbach and Schwieberdingen. In the years 2020 and 2021, around 800 jobs in administration, sales and research will be reduced in this segment. Earlier, the "Stuttgarter Zeitung" and the "Stuttgarter Nachrichten" reported.

Employee representatives respond "dismayed"

The spokeswoman explained the dismantling with the fact that the automotive industry is in a state of upheaval. The transformation towards electromobility is "in full swing" and this structural change will be accompanied by a downturn in the economy and a weakening demand for diesel and gasoline cars. The spokeswoman said: "We do everything we can to make change as socially responsible as possible." How precisely the jobs would be reduced, has not been decided yet, now there are discussions with employee representatives.

IG Metall Stuttgart and IG Metall Baden-Württemberg reacted "dismayed" to the announcement. "This puts the traditional group in a row with profit-driven automotive suppliers, whose primary goal is to increase the margin - if necessary, on the backs of the employees," it said in a statement. The unions called on Bosch to work together with employees instead of downsizing.

Bosch Group CEO Volkmar Denner

Bosch boss Volkmar Denner had already confirmed in an interview in August that the falling demand for diesel vehicles would lead to a noticeable reduction in jobs. Denner had called for severance packages, early retirement and reducing the number of temporary workers.

The Bosch spokeswoman said now that the company favors a reduction of the weekly working hours to 35 hours. In terms of figures, this corresponds to the capacity of about 500 workplaces.

Bosch currently employs around 410,000 people worldwide, including 140,000 in Germany. According to May data, around 50,000 jobs worldwide depend on diesel alone.
