The retail chains Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd want to introduce the Nutri score according to the Consumer Protection of Foodwatch. The company supports the planned introduction of the label and plans to "apply it to relevant private label products," according to two identical letters to Foodwatch that AFP received on Wednesday. The prerequisite for this is that a corresponding legal framework exists. That could be the case next spring.
Federal Nutrition Minister Julia Klöckner (CDU) had announced at the end of September to introduce the Nutri score in Germany. A consumer survey had shown that a clear majority for the Nährwertampel pronounces as labeling. Klöckner wants to introduce the model "on time" on a voluntary basis, it said.
The Nutri-Score is already in use in some European countries, it informs on the packaging among other things about the sugar, fat and salt content in the product. Foodwatch has long struggled to introduce labeling.
According to their own statements, the organization questioned Aldi as well as the chains Rewe, Lidl and Edeka about the Nutri score. Rewe then replied that he did not want to make a decision until there was an appropriate set of rules. Lidl also said that the discounter was waiting for the federal government to "quickly create the appropriate framework conditions". Edeka wrote that initially the results of a separate "practical test" would be awaited.
